HKBP Glugur stands in Glugur Darat, one of the old areas of the city of Medan. This church is more than a place of worship. It is a home for thousands of Batak members who grow together in the middle of the city, and it is the service center of Ressort Medan Utara, Distrik X Medan Aceh.
Roots from the Batak Land
The story of HKBP Glugur cannot be separated from the great roots of Huria Kristen Batak Protestan. HKBP was born on 7 Oktober 1861 in Pearaja, Tarutung. From there, through the ministry of Ingwer Ludwig Nommensen who is remembered as the Apostle of the Batak, the Gospel spread across the whole Batak land. HKBP then grew into the largest Protestant Christian church in Southeast Asia.
As the Batak people moved to the city, that faith moved along with them. Medan became one of the centers of growth for HKBP members away from home, and Glugur Darat became one of the important points of that fellowship.

Growing in Glugur Darat
HKBP Glugur stands at Jl. Pembangunan III No.57A, Glugur Darat II, Kecamatan Medan Timur. Year after year its congregation grew as this area developed. The church grew into a mature and established huria, with a ministry that reaches many families.
Today HKBP Glugur oversees 16 neighborhoods with 47 Sintua who serve. This number shows a large and well ordered fellowship, where worship, formation, and diakonia run side by side.
Becoming the Center of Ressort Medan Utara
HKBP Glugur was entrusted to be the center of Ressort Medan Utara. Under the same care, three huria pagaran also serve, namely HKBP Pulo Brayan in the Pulo Brayan area, HKBP Marturia in Tanjung Mulia, and HKBP Pardomuan Nauli in Titi Papan. Together with the parent church, they form one family of ministry in Distrik X Medan Aceh.
Ministry and Leadership Today
The congregation's ministry is led by Congregation Leader Ronni E. Silitonga together with Functional Pastor Rosnila Nellawaty Sihombing. The life of the church is supported by the Sintua and various ministry groups, from Sunday School, Naposobulung, Punguan Ina and Ama, choir, to social diakonia.
A Living Congregation
The spirit of togetherness among the congregation was clearly seen on Sunday, 9 Juni 2024. HKBP Glugur held a fundraising celebration for the renovation of the hall and church, and also joined in celebrating the 68th anniversary of HKBP in Medan. Thousands of members attended. The event closed with the giving of ulos, a shared meal, and a donation auction for the building of church facilities.
Moments like this show that HKBP Glugur is more than a building, it is a fellowship that moves, works together, and keeps the heritage of faith.
Stepping into the Future
In line with the HKBP theme 2024 to 2028, namely Transformation based on Roma 12:2, HKBP Glugur keeps renewing itself. The presence of this site is one small step in that direction, so that information, worship schedules, bulletins, and ministry are easy for anyone to reach.
Note: some of the early historical records of the congregation are still kept in memory and church documents. For detailed founding data, we suggest contacting the church office at (061) 6611846.
